On September 3, 2010 at 16:35 UTC (Saturday, September 4 at 04:35 Local Time) a M7.1 earthquake struck the east of the South Island in NZ. The epicentre was located approximately 40 km west of the Christchurch CBD, at a depth of 10km. The epicentre was close to the town of Darfield.
